CHAPTER 10

“Emily, over here.”

Emily walked through the almost empty diner to a booth in the back where Becca Norton was waving to her. Brendon was asleep in his baby carrier on the floor.

“Not much of a crowd,” she said as she slipped into the booth across from her high school nemesis or, more accurately, the wife of her high school nemesis.

“Breakfast is the big meal. I waitressed here my senior year, and the best tips I got were on days off school when I worked breakfast.”

Emily tried to remember Becca working here, but she couldn’t. Guess she’d done a better job of erasing the memories of her high school years in Paradox than she’d thought.

“Hope you don’t mind sitting back here. There’s more room here for Brendon’s seat.”

Emily’s concerns on the way over that she wouldn’t have anything to talk about with Becca may have been unnecessary. Maybe all she’d have to do is sit here and let Becca do all of the talking.

“So, how have you been?” Becca asked. She took two plastic-coated menus from the rack and handed one to Emily.

Emily scanned down the usual list of diner offerings wondering how rude it would be to say she’d been better. She went with a generic, “Good.”

“I heard at the five-year class reunion that you were working at an ad agency in New York.”

“Yep, I still am. Do you know if the Reuben special is good?”

“Matt orders them all of the time. I’m more of a club sandwich person.”

Becca put her menu down. “I’m glad you could make lunch today. Much as I love being a mother, I’m going stir-crazy at home all day with no one but Brendon.”

“Tell me about it. Telecommuting isn’t as great as I’d imagined it would be,” Emily said, surprised at how easy it was to talk with Becca. “And after eight hours of stir-crazy silence, I’ve been treated to a whiny teenager all evening.”

“What’s up with Autumn? She’s usually pretty cheerful.”

Emily eyed Becca to see if that was a dig. Old habits died hard. Nothing in Becca’s expression gave any indication it was. “I had to ground her. And I made her study for her finals this week.”

“That couldn’t have hurt. When I went on leave, she was close to failing my Economics class.”

“You’re kidding? Autumn has always had great grades. Neal and Mom bragged about it to me all the time.”

“Not this year. She wasn’t doing too well in a couple other classes, either. Neal didn’t tell you?”

“No.” The list of things Neal didn’t tell her was growing.

“I’m sure she must have brought her grades up, or you would have gotten a final warning letter from the high school.”

“I haven’t gotten any letter, so as far as I know, she must be okay on that count.” Emily couldn’t block the suspicions that filled her mind. Autumn always brought the mail in with her when she got home from school. She hadn’t had any reason to think that her niece wouldn’t share it all.
